Mary Margaret Cappello, nee Rust, age 45, of Freeburg was born June 1, 1972 in Belleville, IL, and passed away January 20, 2018, under the care of her family and BJC Hospice at Evelyn’s House, Creve Coeur, MO.
Mary grew up in O’Fallon and graduated from O’Fallon Township High School in 1990. She earned her undergraduate degree at McKendree University and her graduate degree at Lindenwood University. She was pursuing her doctorate.
Mary was a mathematics teacher at Cahokia School District’s Seventh Grade Academy. She had been employed there for 16 years.She enjoyed teaching mathematics and helping young peoplefulfill their potential in mathematics and reading. She believed that every student deserved the best she had to give. She also enjoyed helping her nephew with his studies and school projects. Teaching was an enormous part of her life. She held two community reading nights with students and their parents to help spread the joy of reading.
Mary was an avid 5K runner. She competed in a triathlon and was an active participant in Tough Mudder obstacle and challenge courses.She would take every opportunity to try new adventures like hiking, biking, camping, rock climbing, and canoeing. She continually would encourage others when they were facing a challenge. She loved her group of fellow adventurers, and she was a team player. She encouraged each team she was on to work together to achieve their goals.
Mary was a faithful member of Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in O’Fallon, and she volunteered for various activities at her church.
Surviving is her husband Charles (Chad) W. Cappello, Jr., whom she married June 16, 2012, at Blessed Savior.
Surviving are her children Stephanie Mabry in DeKalb, IL, and Andrew Mabry of Freeburg, IL; her brothers Jason and Jonathan Rust; and parents Chris and Sandie Rust.
